The method of delivering fuel to your vehicle’s combustion chamber is critical and can make a big difference in performance. For the most part, two types of systems push fuel into your engine: carbureted and electronic fuel injection, or EFI. EFI systems are in almost all new vehicles. Still, many purists and automotive enthusiasts prefer a carburetor engine, especially if trying to keep their classic car as close to stock as possible. Pros
One of the things that classic car enthusiasts and home mechanics love about carburetor vs. EFI systems is how mechanically simple they are to work on. Diagnosing and repairing independently is much easier if an issue arises with your carburetor. You don’t need a deep knowledge of electronic systems or computer-controlled timing to work on a carburetor engine. This also makes carburetors incredibly easy to tune. If you like to tune your engine to meet specific requirements, a carburetor system will offer your needs the most versatility and tunability.
Cons
While the mechanical operation of carburetors can benefit some people, it can be a downside for others. Because carburetors use a series of channels, floats, and jets, these small components will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. With an EFI system, fewer moving parts get you better general reliability, especially in the long run. This mechanical operation can also cause issues in different driving conditions. The tunability and versatility of a carburetor vs. EFI make it a great choice if you are working on a car that needs to be reliable in extreme situations. The simplicity of carburetors makes them a good option if you build a classic car on a budget. Installing an EFI on an older car may be more trouble and cost more money than it is worth.
Can You Replace Your Own Carburetor?
Since carburetors are relatively simple mechanisms, they are easy to replace when the time comes. To replace a carburetor, you will first need to locate and access it. Most of the time, the carb will be located under the air filter/air cleaner assembly, bolted to the top of the intake manifold. Once you have located the carb, disconnect the fuel and vacuum lines. During this step, you must be careful with the fuel line and catch any fuel that may come out during the removal instead of letting it spill around the engine.
After removing the old carburetor from the mounting bolts, you can install the new one using the same gaskets and seals (unless their condition requires replacement), and mounting points while reconnecting the vacuum and fuel lines. You may need to adjust the new carburetor to get your vehicle running correctly with a smooth idle. Start the engine and listen for any rough noises or strange hiccups while idling. Adjust the idle speed and mixture screws until your vehicle is running normally and sounds like it did before you had to replace the carb. Unless you are replacing the carburetor with an identical carburetor that has the same jets and internal components, expect to have to tune and adjust it to match your engine's needs. Once installed and running, you should listen and look for any leaks or strange sounds and check that the throttle response feels correct.
