Ring and Pinion
Housed in the middle of the rear axle assembly of many cars and trucks are the differential and ring and pinion gears. These components change both the rotational direction and speed between the driveshaft from the transmission and the axles. The differential determines which axle(s) will be powered by the driveshaft rotation (depending on the differential design, such as open or posi-traction) and keeps the ring gear in a fixed location to properly mesh with the pinion gear. The gear ratio is the number of (larger) ring gear teeth divided by the number of (smaller) pinion gear teeth. The numerically higher the gear ratio is, the quicker acceleration is but at the cost of a lower vehicle top speed (think of starting and remaining in first gear on a 10-speed bicycle). On the contrary, a numerically lower gear ratio results in slower acceleration but with a higher top speed. (think of starting in and staying with third gear on a 10-speed bicycle). Over time, from wear and use, or due to being overpowered by increased power, ring and pinions will degrade and fail, requiring replacement.
When selecting a gear ring and pinion kit, the first step is to confirm the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle. Next, confirm the ring gear diameter and number of differential mounting bolts. In addition, confirm the number of splines on the pinion gear.
