Piston Kit
An engine piston is a cylindrical component that moves up and down inside a cylinder as part of the engine's combustion process. It is usually made of aluminum alloy, cast iron, or other durable metals. The piston has three primary functions: it compresses the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber, transfers the energy generated by the fuel combustion to the crankshaft, and seals the combustion chamber to prevent any gas leakage. The piston is attached to a connecting rod, which in turn connects to the crankshaft. When fuel is ignited in the combustion chamber, it creates a high-pressure explosion, forcing the piston down, which turns the crankshaft and powers the vehicle. As the piston moves up and down, it creates a vacuum, drawing in fuel and air into the combustion chamber, which is then compressed by the upward movement of the piston. The piston rings seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall, preventing the fuel mixture from escaping. Overall, the piston plays a crucial role in the engine's operation by converting the energy generated by the combustion process into mechanical energy that powers the vehicle.
When choosing a piston kit for your engine, first confirm the year, make, and engine size. Next, confirm the bore size, compression distance, maximum connecting rod length, wrist pin style (to match your connecting rods), and the compression based on your cylinder head combustion chamber size. From the remaining compatible options, select the piston kit that best fits your application and budget.
JEGS offers a large selection of piston kits from top engine component manufacturers such as Mahle Motorsports Pistons, Crower, Sealed Power, Speedmaster, Lunati, and many others. Each piston is made with high quality materials and assembly to provide long-lasting performance your engine deserves.
