During engine operation, the crankshaft rotates at thousands of RPMs between the block and main caps, which hold it in place. To reduce friction and heat between the three, bearings and oil are used. Bearings create a surface which reduces this friction and heat, and allows its own replacement over time instead of damage to the block and main caps which would be more expensive to replace. Over time from wear or damage, main bearings degrade and fail, requiring replacement.
