Differential Carrier
Found in the rear axle housing, the differential carrier, which the ring gear attaches to, takes the rotation of the driveshaft from the transmission and helps apply it to the wheels, either one or both, depending on how it is designed. The differential carrier assembly is held in place within the axle housing with caps and uses bearings to allow it to spin freely. The ring gear is bolted to it on one side where rotation power is applied, while internal splines are found on each side for the axles to be inserted, so power output can be applied to rotate the wheels. A differential carrier is vehicle and axle housing specific. There are also different traction designs, with an "open" differential only turning one of the rear wheels, and "posi-traction" or "limited slip" powering both wheels, requiring different housings.
When looking for a factory replacement differential carrier, the first step is confirming the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle. Next, check to see if there were different differential sizes or options available from the factory. Then narrow down the options to those which are compatible with your specific application. For custom differential and axle setups, confirm the ring gear diameter, axle spline count, differential carrier bearing size, and any other specifics to ensure proper fitment.
