Diesel Particulate Filter
An automotive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a component of a diesel engine's exhaust system that is designed to reduce emissions of particulate matter (PM) or soot. Diesel engines produce PM as a byproduct of combustion, which can be harmful to human health and the environment. The DPF is typically located in the exhaust system and is made up of a ceramic or metallic filter that traps and stores the PM. The function of an automotive DPF is to capture and store the PM that is produced by the engine. As exhaust gases pass through the DPF, the PM is trapped in the filter, while the exhaust gases continue to pass through and exit the vehicle. Over time, the PM accumulates in the filter, which can lead to reduced performance and increased emissions. Many vehicles incorporate a diesel particulate filter warning light in the dash to let the driver know. To prevent the DPF from becoming clogged with PM, it is periodically regenerated or cleaned. This is typically done by increasing the temperature of the exhaust gases, which burns off the trapped PM and cleans the filter. This process can occur automatically while driving, or it may require the vehicle to be taken to a dealer or mechanic for cleaning with a diesel particulate filter cleaner. A diesel particulate filter usually requires regular maintenance and inspection to ensure their proper functioning, and may be a source of concern for some diesel vehicle owners due to their potential for clogging and reduced performance if not properly maintained.
When choosing a diesel particulate filter for your vehicle, first confirm the year, make, model, and engine size. For some applications, bed length and cab style may play a part in selecting the correct part number. From the remaining DPF options, choose the one that best fits your application needs as well as your budget.
