Axle Assembly
An automotive axle shaft assembly is a critical component in your car's drivetrain that transfers power from the engine to the wheels. The axle assembly has several components, including the axle shafts, CV joints, differential, and wheel bearings. When you step on the gas pedal, the engine sends power to the transmission and differential, which then distributes the power to each wheel, allowing the axles to turn at different speeds, such as when going around a corner. The axle shafts and CV joints allow the wheels to move up and down as well as turn left and right in front wheel drive applications, while remaining rigid in a solid axle setup (such as a rear axle assembly). Finally, the wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate smoothly and support the weight of the car. Without a functioning axle assembly, your car wouldn't be able to move. Over time from use, axles can break, requiring replacement.
When choosing an axle assembly, the first step is confirming the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle. Next, if looking at complete assemblies for a replacement, confirm the ring and pinion ratio, differential type (open or posi), as well as ring gear diameter and mourning bolt quantity. From the remaining options, choose the axle assembly that meets your needs and budget.
JEGS offers a large selection of axle assemblies from top drivetrain manufacturers including ATK, Keyser Manufacturing, Moser Engineering, Zumbrota, Trail Gear, and many others.
