Adjustable Pressure Plate
The RAM Billet Aluminum Pressure Ring Long Style Pressure Plates are eleven inches in diameter and perfect for use in applications from Stock eliminator to fast street, up to 1000 horsepower. This adjustable long style pressure plate provides the smooth, controlled launch that is critical to achieving the lowest elapsed time. The key to an effective competition clutch system is progressive engagement versus using only static holding power to maximize the traction applied to the drive wheels. Based on the 11-inch Long Style clutch cover, these units are available with either nodular iron pressure ring or a 7075 T-6 billet aluminum pressure ring, which reduces rotating weight by about 3 pounds.

Both pressure rings significantly lower the required static pressure than would be used with conventional clutch discs. The new billet aluminum pressure ring models feature segmented steel inserts that are designed to allow expansion and contraction under severe duty loads and maintains it's shape, with minimal warpage or distortion, better than a single piece insert during extreme heating and cooling cycles. The segments are also bolted in place, not riveted, to allow the unit to be serviced at the track or back at the shop instead of having to ship it out for repair!
The adjustable long style pressure plate provides two types of clamp pressure. Static pressure is constant; the same whether the engine is off or spinning 7000 RPM. Centrifugal pressure is applied by the clutch levers and increases as engine RPM increases. These pressures allow the clutch to be set so the car can be launched at a lower RPM than the shift point, and the clutch will slip enough to maintain traction for a smooth launch and then lock up as the engine RPM increases. Changing the launch RPM or altering the base pressure allows you to respond to changing track conditions on the starting line, while centrifugal weights on the levers will control how slowly or quickly the clutch will lock up through the gears. As a starting point, you typically want to start with the maximum pressure setting for your pressure plate. Optimum launch is 2500-4000 RPM below your shift point. Static pressure controls the launch of the car, centrifugal pressure controls the clutch through the gears.
