Rocker Arm

One of the main components in the cylinder head valve train is the rocker arm. Rocker arms are levers that are pushed up by pushrods or camshaft lobes on one end of the pivot, causing them to push down on the valves on the other end, opening them. There are three common options of rocker arms: stamped steel, roller tip, and full roller rockers. Stamped steel rocker arms are often found on older engines and do not contain any roller bearings. They have the lowest performance, but the longest life. Roller tip rocker arms are very similar to stamped steel rocker arms but with a roller bearing tip, reducing friction where the rocker arm contacts the valve stem tip. They are very affordable, fit under stock valve covers, and provide a slight boost in horsepower. Full roller rocker arms are made from either aluminum or a stronger material than cast iron. In addition to roller tips, they have a roller fulcrum bearing where the rocker arm is attached to the mounting stud. This reduces friction further, freeing up even more horsepower. However, in most cases, taller valve covers are required to fit with the larger rocker arms.

When choosing an engine rocker arm set, first confirm the year, make, and engine size. Next confirm the rocker arm stud size as well as the rocker arm ratio that is needed for proper operation. Note that a higher ratio rocker arm increases camshaft lift, but also puts the valve closer to the piston. Finally, decide if you need stamped steel, roller tip, or full roller rocker arms. Remember that if using full roller rocker arms, a taller valve cover may be needed. From the remaining compatible options, choose the set that meets your application needs and budget.
