Flywheel
Connecting the engine crankshaft to the clutch is the flywheel. Flywheels (not to be confused with a flexplate, found with automatic transmission applications) have two main purposes. The first is to provide a way to crank the engine with the use of an electrical starter that engages and rotates the ring gear on the outside of the flywheel. Once the engine is running, and when the clutch pedal is released and the transmission is in gear, the clutch disc grabs the spinning flywheel surface, as well as the pressure plate surface, and begins to rotate. This engagement with the flywheel then rotates the transmission gears and the rest of the vehicle drivetrain, including the wheels.
Installation of a flywheel involves torquing the bolts to the crankshaft and then installing the clutch kit and starter. Removal is usually easy, but sometimes requires a flywheel puller when they become stuck. It is important to select the correct flywheel to match your engine, transmission, clutch, and starter.
