Bellhousing
A bellhousing (sometimes referred to as a "bellhouse") assembly is a metal housing that connects the engine to the transmission in a vehicle with a manual transmission (or racing automatic transmission). The transmission bellhousing is typically made of aluminum or steel and is bolted to the back of the engine, covering the flywheel and clutch assembly. The function of the bellhousing is to provide a rigid, secure mounting point for the transmission, as well as to protect the clutch assembly and the flywheel from damage. In addition, the bellhousing typically contains a fork or lever that is used to actuate the clutch, allowing the driver to disengage the clutch and shift gears. The bellhousing is a critical component of any manual transmission system, providing the necessary structural support and protection for the clutch and flywheel, and allowing the driver to control the engagement and disengagement of the clutch. In racing applications with automatic transmissions, bellhousings are designed to contain any flying debris, should a torque converter or flexplate fail and disintegrate.
