Tie Rod End
In order for a vehicle to turn, a steering system is needed. From the front wheels to the steering wheel, a number of components are used to provide the driver a way to change the direction of a car or truck. One of these parts is the tie rod. Attached to the steering hub (which hinges on the ball joints) on each side, the tie rod is a ball-and-socket connector threaded to either a rack and pinion unit or the inner tie rod and centerlink assembly. When the steering wheel is turned, the pitman arm (attached to the steering gear box) or rack and pinion pushes the steering linkage, including the tie rod, out on one side while pulling the steering linkage on the opposite side inward the same distance. This changes the wheel and tire direction together in unison. Tie rods are also adjusted during alignment when the toe (the direction the tire is pointed inward or outward) is out of specification.
