Connecting Rod Bearing
During engine combustion, the fuel and air mixture is ignited in the block cylinder, creating an explosion that pushes down on the piston, attached to the connecting rod and rotating the crankshaft, similar to pushing down on the pedals of a bicycle. To Allow the connecting rods to rotate on the crankshaft as they go up and down, rod bearings and oil are required. This reduces friction, which produces heat, expansion and part failure. Connecting rod bearings use two pieces that surround the crankshaft and are held in place between the main body of the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap. Over time from use, rod bearings will wear and fail, requiring replacement.
When choosing rod bearings, first confirm the year, make, and size of the engine. Next, confirm that the crankshaft being used does not require oversize bearings from machine work that was needed, as thickness is critical for proper installation and operation. Then, from the remaining compatible options, choose the connecting rod bearings that match your application and budget. Don't forget to also add Plastigauge to your order so you can confirm proper clearance during installation.
