Alternator
Every car and truck has a battery in order to start the engine and power the vehicle electrical system, and needs a way to keep it charged. While a battery charger can be used, it requires remembering to plug it into an outlet and connect it to the vehicle battery for minutes or hours. However, an alternator allows you to keep the vehicle battery charged while you drive, using the engine. This component is belt-driven and creates an AC current that is converted to the required vehicle DC current through brushes, coils of wire, and a rectifier within the alternator housing. When the battery voltage is reached (for example 12.6-14 volts on a 12-volt battery), the alternator regulator stops the flow of power to the battery.
When an alternator repair or replacement is required for a factory stock application, the vehicle year, make, model, and engine needs to be confirmed for proper fitment and operation. For custom applications, the correct charging amperage needs to match the vehicle electrical system's needs and the alternator needs to have adapter brackets in order to properly bolt it to the engine and align it with the crankshaft pulley.
